Malaysia States & Federal Territories (Selangor)

2. Selangor

Selangor is the most developed state in Malaysia – home to the sophisticated Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the renowned Sepang International Racing Circuit as well as containing Kuala Lumpur, the economic hub of Malaysia, and Putrajaya, the country’s administrative capital, within its boundaries.

With a population exceeding 4 million, Selangor is propelled by urban growth and commercialisation, evident in the large numbers of shopping centres, business complexes and industrial areas. Hence, Selangor is the richest state in Malaysia.

Today, Selangor is a modern state equipped with the latest facilities and infrastructure. Citizens from across Malaysia flock to Selangor (and Kuala Lumpur) to work and start businesses.

Attractions in Selangor

  • Batu Caves

Batu Caves, one of Kuala Lumpur’s most frequented tourist attractions, is a limestone hill comprising three major caves and a number of smaller ones. Located approximately 11 kilometres to the north of Kuala Lumpur, this 100-year-old temple features idols and statues erected inside the main caves and around it. Incorporated with interior limestone formations said to be around 400 million years old, the temple is considered an important religious landmark by Hindus.

Cathedral Cavej – the largest and most popular cavern in Batu Caves – houses several Hindu shrines beneath its 100-metre-high arched ceiling. At the foot of Batu Hill are two other cave temples – the Art Gallery Cave and Museum Cave – which houses numerous Hindu statues and paintings.

  • Sunway Lagoon

Sunway Lagoon is truly one of a kind. It is a unique land of play and leisure that spans over 88 acres, giving it the capability to host events of any size. From 70 to a staggering crowd of 70,000 if need be. Visitors could stay at the 1,234 rooms at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa; or shop at the grand Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall, all within the Sunway City.

Step inside and you’ll discover a magical kingdom of pure fun and excitement. Experience the wonders of over 80 rides and attractions spread across the Water Park, Amusement Park, Extreme Park, Wildlife Park and Scream Park. This multi-park destination also boasts the World’s Largest Man-Made Sandy Surf Beach, the World’s Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge, Malaysia’s First Interactive Zoo, Asia’s Longest Flying Fox Trail and also Lynton V Harris’ Scream Park, a live interactive scare attraction.

  • Broga Hill

Bukit Broga, also known as 'Bukit Lalang' - after the local species of grass that grows abundantly here, is a hill in Semenyih, at 400 meters high and 40 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur on the trunk road to Broga. It can be reached a short distance later after University of Nottingham, where the entrance starts at left from an oil palm estate opposite a rabbit park. Famed for its incredibly panoramic views (especially at dawn) along with easy accessibility on foot, the hill is a popular tourist attraction among locals; the estate owner cashes on the glut of visitors during weekends and public holidays by charging MYR2 per vehicle that parks on his grounds.

From the peak, visitors get a spacious view of the plains, coated by a mixture of rainforest, oil palm plantations, villages and towns, along with distant mountains. At dawn, mist rising from the ground from the warmth of the sun envelops the landscape in a carpet of white, evoking a surreal atmosphere. The hike while steep is relatively easy, taking anywhere between 20 and 45 minutes to reach the highest peak depending on one's fitness level, or photo stops. There are three peaks in total, each one ascends above the other through a clear path fringed by tall grass at each side. From the summit, a proper jungle trail leads through primary rainforest to Gunung Tok Wan (675 meters), a roughly one and a half hour hike on meandering slopes

  • i-City (Shah Alam)

i-City Shah Alam is a stunning 72-acre theme park that’s well-frequented for its nightly colourful display of LED-lit attractions as well as exciting rides and unique museums. Known as the City of Digital Lights, i City is accessible within an hour’s drive from downtown Kuala Lumpur and houses an array of exciting activities, such as a massive water park, 3D and wax museums, and the biggest snow park in Malaysia.

There’s also a colourful Ferris wheel, two-tiered carousels and funfair-like booths set up where you can win stuffed toys, while plenty of food stalls and cafes offer an extensive range of local and international delicacies. As the sun sets in I-City Shah Alam, its sprawling ‘forest’ of artificial maple and pine trees as well as quirky, plastic figures such as peacocks, flamingos, and giraffes are illuminated with millions of LED lights.
